Free Event Promotes Physical and Mental Wellbeing

Compass Recovery College

RESIDENTS are invited to a free event this month aimed at promoting physical and mental wellbeing.

Compass Recovery College is hosting the wellbeing day at Reading Minster on Thursday 28th February. Research has shown that two thirds of us experience a mental health problem in our lifetimes. The event aims to promote activities available locally that help support physical and mental wellbeing. The college will be joined by several local charities and organisations providing information about physical and mental wellbeing, including; • How to get fit; • Services available in Reading; • The importance of creativity in promoting wellbeing. People who have overcome mental health challenges will be sharing their experiences and tips for success during the day. The Mayor of Reading, Cllr Debs Edwards and Councillor Graeme Hoskin, Reading’s Lead Member for Health, Wellbeing & Sport and Cllr Tony Jones, Reading’s Lead Member for Adult Social Care, will also be supporting the event.

Reading’s Lead Member for Health, Wellbeing & Sport, and the Council’s Mental Health Champion, Cllr Graeme Hoskin said:

“I’m pleased to support this wellbeing event and I hope people will drop by to find out more about what Compass and other local organisations can offer. “We want to help people start 2019 with positive thoughts about wellbeing. We also want to emphasise how physical and mental wellbeing doesn't all have to be about lifting huge weights and climbing mountains! It can be as simple as joining in with a group walk around one of Reading’s beautiful parks. “Any of us can develop a mental health issue, and one in four people will be affected by mental illness in any one year. The effects can be as debilitating as physical illness, but may often remain hidden with people unable or unsure about how to get help. This free event is a great opportunity to find out what support for wellbeing is available and to chat to others in a friendly, supportive atmosphere.” The event runs from 10.30am to 2pm. Entrance is free and refreshments will be provided.
