Children invited to ‘Share a Story’ for World Book Day

  • Theme of World Book Day this year is 'Share a Story', Reading Library Service wants to encourage children of all ages to come together and share the joy of reading for pleasure
  • They can enjoy a specially commissioned ‘story hunt’ from local storyteller, John Kirk, in celebration of the Abbey’s 900th anniversary this year
  • Any children’s books borrowed from Central, Caversham or Tilehurst Libraries during March will include a World Book Day Token (whilst stocks last).

WITH only one week to go before World Book Day (4 March 2021), Reading Library Service wants to encourage children of all ages to come together to share the joy of reading for pleasure.

This year’s theme is ‘Share a Story.’ A specially commissioned ‘story hunt’ from local storyteller, John Kirk, will be available online, with a medieval themed tale featuring Reading Abbey, also in celebration of the Abbey’s 900th anniversary this year: https://youtu.be/V1BrLR_ek5E.

Any children’s books borrowed from Central, Caversham or Tilehurst Libraries during March will include a World Book Day Token (whilst stocks last). The £1 book tokens can then be swapped for one of the free books available from participating booksellers or used to get £1 off any full price book or audiobook.

Although the tokens are valid until Sunday 28 March, given the current lockdown restrictions, participating booksellers will honour the tokens beyond the 28 March while stocks last.

Titles available include ‘There’s a Wolf in your book’ by Tom Fletcher, ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson, ‘The River Whale’ by Sita Brahmachari, ‘Protect the Planet’ by Jess French and ‘Skulduggery Pleasant’ by Derek Landy. Cllr Karen Rowland, Lead Councillor for Culture, Heritage and Recreation, said:

“I’m really excited for World Book Day! As with everything else, our celebrations this year will look a bit different – but there are still many exciting activities to join in online.

“The World Book Day vouchers are a great, free way for youngsters to keep engaging with reading. I remember taking part in activities that celebrate reading as a child and they instilled in me a love of reading that I still have to this day.

“If you order your children’s books for collection from Central, Tilehurst and Caversham branches, which are currently open for limited service, at www.reading.gov.uk/libraries we’ll include a World Book Day token.

“Do check out our online ‘Abbey’ themed story hunt and don’t forget the Library’s fantastic range of free eBooks, eAudio  and eMagazines. If you aren’t a member you can sign up easily online today.”
