Reading FC were in the play-offs facing Wolves, with the possibility of a second successive promotion. The momentum seemed to be with the Royals in their new all-seater Madejski Stadium to make it all the way to the top flight in English football for the first time in their history, but it was not to be and Wolves secured promotion.
