Upgrade for South Reading and Meadway leisure centres
- Refurbishment of gyms with brand-new equipment for strength and cardio training
- Local leisure centres also offer swimming, indoor sports halls, outdoor sports facilities and classes
Customers at South Reading and Meadway leisure centres are enjoying an upgraded workout following full gym refurbishments, as part of the Council’s transformation of leisure centres across the town.
The two centres have benefited from £250,000 Council investment to ensure a modern, high-quality training environment for Reading’s communities.
The gym upgrades come after brand new leisure centres were opened at Rivermead and Palmer Park in 2023 and 2022 respectively. GLL runs the four leisure centres on behalf of the Council.
The redesigned gyms at South Reading and Meadway now feature Technogym equipment including strength machines, plate-loaded kit and cardiovascular equipment.
Different machines offer a variety of training, including muscle building and strength development, rehabilitation and general fitness. The cardio suite features treadmills, cross trainers, cycles and stair machines.
South Reading Leisure Centre, in Northumberland Avenue, offers a 25-metre swimming pool, a sports hall which covers badminton, basketball and five-a-side football and a 3G football pitch and floodlit tennis courts outside. Classes include HIIT, yoga, Pilates and boxfit.
Meadway, in Conwy Close, Tilehurst, offers a 20-metre pool, a sports hall for badminton and basketball, plus squash courts and a cycle studio. Classes include HIIT, yoga and Pilates as well as junior fitness classes, over 50s sessions and pickleball.
GLL Reading Resident’s Card offers up to 30% discount on activity charges and up to 50% discount for concessions.
Cllr Jacopo Lanzoni, Lead Councillor for Leisure and Culture, tried some of the new gym equipment at South Reading Leisure Centre.
He said:
“I am really pleased to see this investment in South Reading and Meadway leisure centres.
“The brand-new gym equipment is great quality and ideal for customers who want to build strength, improve their cardio performance or just work on their general fitness.
“Both leisure centres also offer a wide range of other activities so residents can enjoy a swim, indoor sports, team games and a variety of classes.
“It is important that residents have these quality facilities nearby as well as at our larger Rivermead and Palmer Park leisure centres so it is convenient and easy for everyone to keep fit.”
