Statement: Forbury Gardens Attack Reading

Everybody at Reading Borough Council joins residents of the town in being both shocked and appalled at the horrific attack at Forbury Gardens yesterday. The Council’s thoughts and prayers are with the families of the three people who lost their lives, and for those who remain seriously injured. Along with residents of the town, we would also like to express our appreciation for the incredible response of colleagues in the emergency services who acted so swiftly yesterday evening to prevent further harm. The Council has been in constant contact with Thames Valley Police and will continue to assist Police colleagues in any way we can. We also thank residents for their continued cooperation with the Police as their investigation continues. Further details will, of course, emerge as that investigation progresses and it is unhelpful to speculate further at this early stage. Everyone is deeply saddened by these events. Reading is a safe and peaceful town with a long and proud history of good community relations, and it will be more important than ever to stand by these local strengths. As a mark of respect, the Council’s flag will be flying at half-mast all week.   Please direct any Reading Council media requests to: 07808 138932 We will add details to the Council's website www.reading.gov.uk this morning as soon as possible regarding road closures within the town centre.
