Remembrance and Armistice events in Reading

  • Reading will come together in remembrance in two ceremonies this year
  • Main service and parade take place in the town centre on Sunday 10 November
  • Monday 11 November marks Armistice Day, with a short ceremony at the Forbury War Memorial

READING will come together to pay respects to the men and women who have sacrificed their lives to defend this country, with two Remembrance ceremonies this year.

Remembrance Sunday marks Reading’s main service and parade, which will take place in the town centre on Sunday 10 November.

Members of the public are invited to attend the Remembrance Service at Reading Minster of St Mary the Virgin from 9.25 am. There will be readings from Mr Andrew Try, Lord Lieutenant of The Royal County of Berkshire, The Mayor of Reading, Cllr Glenn Dennis, and Revd. Canon Liz Jackson.

Following the church service, a march through the town centre led by The Waterloo Band and Bugles of the 7 Rifles will leave Reading Minster at around 10.15 am, before making its way down to the Forbury Gardens.

The Remembrance Ceremony at the Forbury War Memorial will include the laying of the poppy wreaths and a two-minute silence at 11am, as well as a performance by Ukrainian choir Kryla (КРИЛА).

Monday 11 November marks Armistice Day this year, and Reading’s Mayor, Councillor Glenn Dennis, will lead a two-minute silence at Forbury Gardens War Memorial at 11 am. Members of the public are again welcome to attend.

Mayor of Reading, Cllr Glenn Dennis, said:

“It will be an honour to lead this year’s Remembrance ceremonies at the Forbury War Memorial, and I would encourage as many people as possible to join me on Sunday 10, and Monday 11 November, to honour those who have served and those still serving to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.”

Cllr Liz Terry, Leader of Reading Borough Council, said:

“We want to invite all residents to join in this important time of commemoration and reflection, as Reading comes together to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day and salute the bravery and courage of personnel both past and present.

“Those unable to join us in person can follow the live streams on Sunday and Monday from just before 11am on the Council’s Facebook page.”
