Reading Post-16 Transport Policy consultation goes live

  • Consultation launched on Post-16 Transport Policy
  • Aimed at promoting independence and making best use of public resources
  • Details of face-to-face events being held on the proposed changes to follow.

A consultation has been published on proposed changes to Reading Borough Council’s Post-16 Transport Policy.

The proposals aim to ensure that children and young people can access education while promoting independence, preparing young people for adulthood and making the best use of public resources.

The Council is seeking views of children and young people, parents and carers, schools, colleges and other stakeholders on several changes, including:

  • Introduction of proposed charges in certain circumstances, together with clearer information about when charges may apply
  • Wider use of Personal Transport Budgets as an alternative form of travel assistance where appropriate
  • Greater emphasis on independent travel and the support available from the Council, schools and colleges to help young people develop the skills and confidence needed to travel independently.

Face-to-face consultation events are being held with the Director of Education and officers from the Home to School Transport Service. Details will be available shortly.

The consultation closes on Monday 5 October.

Cllr Rachel Eden, Lead Councillor for Education and Public Health at Reading Borough Council, said:

“We understand how important the journey to and from school and college can be and the impact independent travel can have in preparing young people for adulthood and accessing meaningful opportunities.

“This consultation looks to provide clarity around the range of travel assistance options available, ensuring that those that need it have access to support, while promoting independence and making the best use of resources where possible.

“We welcome your views and attendance at our in-person events.”
