‘Outstanding’ rating for Reading children’s home

  • Pinecroft rated 'Outstanding' in all three areas
  • The home "contributes to significantly improved outcomes" for children and young people
  • "Welcoming atmosphere" and "highly ambitious manager" praised

A children’s home for children and young people with complex learning difficulties has been judged as ‘Outstanding’ following a full Ofsted inspection in January.

Pinecroft residential home in Whitley received an ‘Outstanding’ rating in all three areas – overall experiences and progress of children and young people, how well children and young people are helped and protected, and the effectiveness of leaders and managers.

The report highlighted that children “have made exceptional progress from their starting points”, with staff developing “a thorough understanding of individual, and sometimes complex, needs.”

It added that “children benefit from a wide range of enriching experiences both within the home and in the community”, and “enjoy consistent and attentive care from staff who demonstrate exceptional commitment to their wellbeing.”

The home’s “highly ambitious and innovative” manager was praised for collaborating “effectively with external agencies and confidently advocating for children’s needs”, and the home’s welcoming atmosphere is said to “create a sense of safety and comfort.”

This was Pinecroft’s first Ofsted inspection since children’s services was brought back in to Reading Borough Council in October 2025.

Cllr Wendy Griffith, Reading’s Lead Councillor for Children, said:

“This is a fantastic result that recognises all the incredible work carried out every day at Pinecroft.

“I have seen first-hand how hard-working, compassionate and diligent the staff are, so it’s great to see them formally recognised.

“We are immensely proud of this report and the difference Pinecroft makes in the lives of so many children, young people and their families.”
