One Week Left to Register to Vote
On Thursday 2 May residents in Reading will go to the polls to have their say on who represents them at a local level. Local government elections select councillors, who are responsible for making decisions on running services in your local area. These include housing, education and children’s services, transport, planning, parks, leisure, fire and public safety, adult social care, and waste management. In order to vote residents must be on the electoral register. The deadline to register to vote in local elections is fast approaching. With only one week to go until the deadline to register to vote in local elections, Reading Borough Council is urging residents who have not registered at their current address to make sure they are registered in time. The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Friday 12 April. Anyone can apply online at gov.uk/register-to-vote. It takes just five minutes.
Chris Brooks, Electoral Registration Officer for Reading Borough Council, said:
“Time is running out to make sure you can take part in the local elections. These elections are an opportunity to make your voice heard and have a say on who represents you on issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in Reading. If you’re not registered by 12 April, you won’t be able to vote.”Phillippa Saray, Electoral Commission Regional Manager for the East and Southeast of England, said:
“If you have recently turned 18 or moved home, it is particularly important that you act to ensure that you are registered to vote. It takes just five minutes online and means that you can take part in this important election.” If you were registered to vote in the last election and your details have not changed, you will still be registered to vote. Electors are being given notice of changes / information affecting the following polling stations for the 2019 Local Borough Elections:- The Polling Station previously in St George’s Church Hall (now demolished) will again move into St George’s Church (Norcot Ward) which is on the same site and immediately next to the demolished hall.
- Norcot Youth and Community Centre is closed and due to be demolished. The Emergency Planning Vehicle will be based on the same site and used as a temporary Polling Station.
- Southcote Library is now closed and the Polling Station has moved to Southcote Community Centre (Coronation Square). South Reading Youth and Community Centre has now changed its name to South Reading Community Hub
- Even though Battle Library will be closed for refurbishment, it will be open on 2nd May 2019 for use as a Polling Station only
