Not Long Left To Register to Vote in the General Election

RESIDENTS do not have much time left to register to vote in the General Election on December 12th.

With news of the national vote next month, Reading Borough Council is once again reminding residents they need to register to have their say on who forms the next Government. Residents living in Kentwood Ward will additionally need to register to cast their vote in the Kentwood by election, which also takes place on Thursday December 12. The Council’s annual canvass process is continuing. Third and final reminder letters are now being delivered by door to door canvassers to all outstanding addresses in Reading who have not yet returned their Household Enquiry forms. Around 73,000 forms were sent households back in July. 58,734 have so far been returned. Residents who have lost their forms can get a copy by emailing the Council’s local registration team at elections@reading.gov.uk or by calling 0118 937 3717.

Christopher Brooks, Electoral Registration Returning Officer at Reading Borough Council, said:

“If you are not currently registered, your name will not appear on the forms that have been sent out. If you want to register, the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote, or we’ll send you information explaining how to do this in the post. Anyone not on the electoral register by the registration deadline of midnight on Tuesday November 26th will not be able to vote for their Government of choice.” The dates for residents to be aware of are:
  • Registration Deadline – Tuesday 26th November (Midnight)
  • Last Day for Postal/Postal Proxy Applications (and for changes to existing Postal, Postal Proxy and Proxy Votes) – Tuesday 26th November 5.00pm
  • Proxy Deadline – Wednesday 4th December – 5.00pm
Students can register at home or / and in the place they are at college or university. Those who are registered in two different areas can only vote in one at a general election. Any residents who have any questions can contact their local registration team at elections@reading.gov.uk or on 0118 937 3717.
