New Directions College launches in-house catering work experience at Cedar Court
- New partnership scheme offers hands-on experience in a working kitchen for hospitality students
- Weekly sessions see students take on a variety of roles under the guidance of experienced professionals
HOSPITALITY students at Reading’s adult community college, New Directions, will benefit from hands-on work experience in a new partnership with one of the Council’s sheltered housing schemes, Cedar Court.
For the first time, learners can exercise the skills acquired in the classroom in a working setting, offering hands-on experience in a nurturing and welcoming setting.
The weekly sessions will see students take on various roles, from food preparation and service to customer interaction and teamwork, all under the guidance of experienced professionals in Cedar Court’s in-house restaurant.
This practical experience is a crucial component of their training, offering them the chance to refine their skills in a supportive, real-world environment.
The partnership shows New Directions College's dedication to delivering exceptional education and training opportunities, ensuring that students are well-equipped to meet the demands of the hospitality industry, and providing high-quality meals and service for the residents at Cedar Court.
Councillor Ruth McEwan, Reading’s Lead Member for Education and Public Health, said:
“Now, in its 66th year, New Directions College plays a pivotal role at the heart of our community, supporting thousands of adults in gaining the skills they need for employment, further education, or personal or social development. It’s brilliant to see it continue to go from strength to strength, supporting its learners with innovative and valuable opportunities.”
Councillor Paul Gittings, Reading Borough Council’s lead member for Adult Social Care, said:
“We are immensely proud of Reading’s hospitality sector; this partnership is a wonderful addition. I’m delighted that we are harnessing the skills and commitment of our New Directions learners with this brand new scheme, affording them important work experience in their sector, while also supplying exceptional service and delicious meals to our Cedar Court residents.”
