  • Annual Civic Carol Concert being held at Reading Minster of St Mary the Virgin, 14 December from 6:30pm
  • Service includes carols, readings, and a performance from Ukrainian choir Kryla

READING Minster will again open its doors for Reading’s Civic Carol Service on Thursday 14 December 2023.

An evening of carols and readings retelling the story of the Nativity is again being hosted by Reading Minster of St Mary the Virgin, in St Mary’s Butts, from 6.30pm.

The free Civic Service is a highlight of the town’s festive season, and members of the public are welcome to join.

The service includes carols for the whole congregation to join in with, including ‘Ding Dong! Merrily on High', ‘Away in a Manger’, ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’, and performances from the Minster Choir.

Ukrainian choir Kryla will perform ‘Carol of the Bells’ in Ukrainian – ‘Shchedryk’, and peace candles will be lit for the congregation and the seven continents.

There will also be traditional readings throughout, from The Mayor of Reading, Cllr Tony Page, Tom Price of Reading Pride, Reading Refugee Support Group, Matt Whitelock of Pride of Reading, and Rank & File.

Rev. Sonya Wratten will welcome the congregation to the Minster and invite members to enjoy festive refreshments after the service, kindly provided by The Purple Turtle.

Mayor of Reading, Cllr Tony Page, said:

“The Civic Carol Service is a much-loved Christmas tradition in Reading. I’m looking forward to seeing as many people as possible at the Minster on 14 December. Please join in the festive cheer and enjoy some delicious, mulled wine and a mince pie after the service!”
