Solar Mural

Help create a unique cultural landmark in Reading

  • Residents invited to join free workshops throughout August to help paint a one-of-a-kind mural comprising cutting-edge solar panels
  • The interactive Solar Mural will include lights, sound and sensors that respond to passers-by at New Directions College

Residents are being invited to be part of a unique community art project through the summer.

The Solar Mural artwork is being created by artist Commando Jugendstil in partnership with New Directions College.

The project is bringing together creativity, sustainability and local people to create a new cultural landmark for everyone.

Free workshops are happening in the town centre and south Reading throughout August where volunteers can help paint the mural, regardless of artistic experience.

The college and Commando Jugendstil secured funding from Arts Council England for the project which will turn a wall at New Directions College into a large interactive mural made up of painted artwork and unique solar panels that can generate renewable energy.

The Solar Mural will include lights, sound and sensors that will respond as people walk past, making it an engaging and welcoming space for everyone.

Volunteers are invited to drop-in and join in painting the mural on Saturdays between 10am-6pm,throughout August at Reading Bike Hub, in King Street, in the town centre, and at New Directions College, in Northumberland Avenue, Tuesday to Friday, 9am-4pm, until 29 August. No registration is required.

Cllr Rachel Eden, Lead Councillor for Education and Public Health, said:

“The Solar Mural is very exciting community arts project which is being created with residents, volunteers and learners from New Directions College.

“The project is about bringing people together, encouraging conversations around sustainability and showing that green technology can be creative and accessible.

“People who enjoy being creative can give as much or as little time as they wish at the painting sessions, while meeting new people and learning new skills. Just turn up, pick up a paintbrush and join in.

“You will be helping to create a landmark that people can feel proud of and that celebrates community, creativity and a more sustainable future for Reading.”
