Green waste collections to remain paused in Reading

THE COLLECTION of green waste in Reading will remain paused for at least another two weeks, when the decision will be reviewed again.
Due to COVID-19 pressures, the collection of garden waste was paused from Monday 19 July, a decision in line with many other councils to ensure that priority collections of residual waste, recycling and food waste continue uninterrupted.
The Council has been actively recruiting new staff to ensure the service can resume as soon as possible, but the effects of the pandemic continue to mean that the service cannot restart at this time, with some staff off with COVID-19 symptoms.
Residents who subscribe to the green waste collection service will have their subscription extended to cover any weeks lost through the pause in service. In the meantime, residents are being asked to store their green waste at home or book a slot at the re3 centre in Island Road to dispose of it. Adele Barnett-Ward, Reading Borough Council’s Lead Member for Neighbourhoods and Communities, said:
“The impact of COVID-19 continues to cause disruption to council services across the country. Whilst we are recruiting new staff, we also have staff off with COVID-19 symptoms. We are doing everything we can to keep essential services going, and to protect that we are continuing the pause of green waste collections for now. To assist residents who wish to take their green waste to the Smallmead Recycling Facility, Re3 are conducting a trial of more and longer tip slots this weekend.”
