Bike repairs

Free cycle maintenance sessions to be held throughout Reading in October

  • Dr Bike events planned in five local community areas to complement monthly town centre sessions
  • Local sessions to run weekdays at 3.30-5.30pm so children and families can attend after school
  • Free bike check-ups part of Council’s aim to encourage active travel in the borough

A series of Dr Bike cycle maintenance sessions are planned across Reading borough over the next two weeks in October.

Members of the public are invited to drop by with their bikes for a free maintenance check, basic fixes and safety tips or just find out more about the planned programme of cycling events. The Avanti Cycling team will check and tune-up bicycles, undertake free minor repairs and diagnose more complex issues.

The free sessions are part of the Council’s aim to encourage cycling and walking in the borough to help reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality and benefit the health and wellbeing of Reading residents.

Visitors to the events can also find out more about free adult cycle training sessions that are being held for residents who want to gain the confidence to ride a bike whether it be for commuting, exercise or for enjoyment.

These sessions are open to all but have been timed to run from 3.30-5.30pm in local community areas so children and families can attend after school.

Dr Bike will be held at the following locations between 3.30-5.30pm:

  • Southcote, outside Southcote Library: Tuesday 15 October
  • Coley Park Community Centre: Wednesday 16 October
  • Lyndhurst Road Community Centre: Thursday 17 October
  • Whitley Wood Community Centre: Friday 18 October
  • Hexham Road Community Centre: Wednesday 23 October

The next Dr Bike session in Reading town centre will be held on Thursday 7 November, 11am to 2pm, on Broad Street outside Sainsbury’s and the final Dr Bike of the year will take place in Broad Street on Thursday 5 December.

Cllr John Ennis, Lead Councillor for Climate Strategy and Transport, said:

“Dr Bike sessions in the town centre have been very popular throughout the year. These community events will give even more people the opportunity to make sure their cycles are in good condition.

“These sessions are ideal if you want to give your, or your child’s, bike a quick maintenance check, minor repair or pick up some safety tips.

“Dr Bike is part of the Council’s programme of free cycling activities to encourage active travel, reduce reliance on private cars, improve air quality and benefit people’s health and wellbeing.”
