Smoke Free App 2

Digital Stop Smoking App made Freely Available to Reading Residents

  • New smoke free app launched in Reading to help residents quit
  • App launch comes as smoking rates in Reading fall below 10% for the first time

Smokers in Reading can now get free, round-the-clock support to quit through Smoke Free, a clinically proven app.

The app, which has already helped over one million users worldwide stop smoking, has been clinically proven to more than double a smoker's chance of quitting.

It provides a similar treatment programme to that used in face-to-face services, combining certified advisor support with evidence-based digital tools – accessible anywhere, at any time.

Four clinical trials have found the app effective in helping people quit, with quit rates comparable to those of face-to-face services.

Features include:

  • One-to-one support from National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT-certified) stop smoking advisors, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Full range of quit aids to curb cravings delivered free to homes
  • An artificial intelligence Quit Coach chatbot providing instant support and guidance
  • Daily missions and achievement badges to build confidence and motivation
  • Progress indicators showing time smoke-free, money saved and health improvements
  • Cost calculator showing financial savings from quitting
  • Moderated community for peer-to-peer support.

The app complements Reading's existing stop smoking services and is ideal for those who cannot attend in-person sessions due to work, shift patterns, or family commitments.

The launch comes as Reading celebrates smoking rates falling below 10% for the first time, dropping to 9.3% in 2024 – the lowest prevalence the borough has seen since 2011.

Councillor Rachel Eden, Lead Member for Public Health, said:

“We've already made huge progress in supporting residents to quit smoking, with rates falling below 10% for the first time. This new digital service means even more people can access the support they need to quit, whenever and wherever suits them.

“We know it’s not always easy to attend face-to-face appointments, especially if you work shifts or have caring responsibilities. This app brings expert support directly to your phone, with advisors available around the clock. And it comes at a landmark moment for public health. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which has just received Royal Assent, will protect future generations from ever starting to smoke. But we also have a duty to help today’s smokers quit. This app is another powerful tool in our commitment to helping Reading residents live healthier lives.”
