Council Waives Road Closure Fees Again for Summer Street Parties

  • Communities can host street parties again for free this summer after the Council waives road closure fees
  • Residents can apply online and the deadline is April 29

COMMUNITIES across Reading are being invited to stage Big Lunch Street Parties this summer – and the Council is once again waiving the usual road closure fees.

The window for applying to host a street party on any weekend in June and July, as part of the National Big Lunch celebration, is now open. Residents can apply by completing the form at www.reading.gov.uk/streetparties

Permission will normally be given for a closure, without any associated road closure fee, subject to it not affecting a main through-route or public transport route. Applicants are also advised that they need to have consulted with neighbours and taken into account any concerns.

Residents holding parties will also be responsible for ensuring emergency services can have access to a road if required.

The deadline for applications is Monday 29 April 2024.

Councillor John Ennis, Reading’s Lead Councillor for Strategic Environment, Planning and Transport, said:

“The hosting of community street parties across the town is now well established in Reading, having been in operation for a number of years now.

“The Council is once again waiving the road closure fee which would ordinarily be charged, which will hopefully encourage as many neighbourhoods as possible to take part, including those who have not considered it before.

“The feedback we receive from communities who host a summer street party is overwhelmingly positive and it’s also a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbours better. Nobody can guarantee the weather, but knowing our residents they will make their parties a roaring success, come rain or shine.”

Residents can get more advice on throwing a street party on The Street Party website.
