Council Supports World Suicide Prevention Day

  • Reading adds its name to local authorities supporting World Suicide Prevention Day today
  • Online support is available on the Council's website and mental health support from Compass Recovery College

Reading Borough Council is supporting World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) to help change the narrative on conversations around suicide prevention.

WSPD takes on 10 September every year, to raise awareness about the impacts of suicide and suicidal behaviour, and to encourage everyone to make a commitment to doing what they can to help prevent suicides.

There’s a wealth of support available for Reading residents who might be experiencing suicidal thoughts, from online support available on the Reading Borough Council website to mental health and wellbeing support from Compass Recovery College.

The Council is also working to encourage its own staff to have safe and supportive conversations on suicide prevention. This includes the development of new training and guidance around suicide and suicide prevention.

Ruth McEwan, Lead Councillor for Public Health and Education, at the Council said:

“Suicide is a confronting subject and yet sadly many of us have been touched by it in some way.

“Suicide is a community issue, which requires a community response. That’s why we have support and guidance for our residents and staff to have important conversations and spot the signs of someone who maybe having suicidal thoughts”.
