Communities across Reading Set to Stage Street Parties

THIRTY-FIVE communities have taken advantage of the opportunity to hold street parties without paying the usual road closure fees this year.

Neighbours from across Reading will be coming together over five weekends to celebrate the Royal Wedding or to take part in the Big Lunch Weekend and Great Get Together. All applications to hold a street party were approved and organisers have now been notified. The first weekend of street parties on 19th and 20th May are being held to celebrate the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The second weekend, 2nd & 3rd June are the official dates of this year’s Big Lunch and the third dates, 16th & 17th June are for those who want to celebrate the Big Lunch outside of Ramadan. The fourth and fifth weekends, 23rd & 24th June and 30th June & 1st July, are for those who want to get involved with this year’s Great Get Together. There is normally a fee for organising road closures but this was waived by the Council to encourage communities to hold get-togethers over these weekends.

Cllr Tony Page, Lead Councillor for Strategic Environment, Planning and Transport, said:

“I am pleased to see so many people taking advantage of this opportunity to hold street parties in their neighbourhoods this year. “Communities from across Reading have entered into the spirit of the occasion and organised events which will bring neighbours together. “I hope everyone involved in a street party has a fantastic time and that they can enjoy some dry, warm weather.” The communities holding street parties are:
