Celebrating Reading’s Older People
- Activities and information for older residents
- Find out how to stay independent at home for longer
- Come along to Broad Street Mall
- Tuesday 1 October between 9.30am and 2pm
A free event to celebrate older people in the Reading community is being held on the internationally recognised Older People’s Day 2024.
The event promises a range of engaging activities at Broad Street Mall on Tuesday 1 October arranged in conjunction with Age UK Berkshire. Charities, voluntary organisations, and a variety of council services will be available for specialist advice and support.
There will be lots of free events like folk dancing, singing and seated exercises. Experts will be there to talk about anything from social activities to practical help and information. Free benefit checks, hearing tests, an NHS health check, and a free pension credit surgery will also be available.
Come along anytime from 9.30am to 2pm with the Deputy Mayor Councillor Alice Mpofu-Coles officially opening the event at 10am.
Councillor Paul Gittings, Reading Borough Council’s Lead Councillor for Adult Social Care, said: "Older people make huge contributions to our community and this is our opportunity to celebrate later life.
“I would encourage residents and their families to come along to this free and vibrant event to discover the wealth of local services available to support and enhance their lives and help look to the future. You find out about something you didn’t know might help you.
“For example, the TEC Team have access to a range of devices, which help residents with some challenges of getting older, but also give their family peace of mind."
International Day of Older Persons, observed globally annually on 1 October, is a day dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the resilience and contributions of older individuals in our communities.
